Hand Painted Kitchen Evesham, Worcestershire
This kitchen had been the heart of the home for around fifteen years. Built in oak and given a limed finish, it had aged gracefully but was beginning to look tired; the finish had flattened over time and no longer reflected the character or warmth the homeowners loved. They didn’t want a dramatic overhaul or a brand-new installation, just a thoughtful modern refresh that brought the space back to life while honouring the original cabinetry.
Although this was a relatively modest project in terms of size, it was approached with exactly the same care, preparation and attention to detail I bring to every kitchen I hand paint. Smaller doesn’t mean simpler. In fact, projects like this often require an especially sensitive hand: enough transformation to create impact, but subtle enough that the kitchen still feels “right” within the home.
The process began with a deep clean and a careful sanding-back of the limed oak, removing years of residue and gently easing the surface into a state that would take paint beautifully. Once primed, the cabinets were ready for the part of the job I love most: the hand painting itself. Working entirely by hand (brush) allows me to control every brushstroke, working with the contours and grain. It’s a slower, more considered method than spraying, but the results speak for themselves.
For this kitchen, the clients chose a low-lustre finish, which feels quietly refined. It’s a finish that works particularly well in lived-in family spaces: elegant but never showy, tactile without drawing attention to itself. Between each coat, I lightly sanded to refine the surface, gradually building up a flawless finish that looks and feels bespoke.
The transformation at the end was incredible; a old, tired finish now a hand painted, flawless beauty. What had been a dated, slightly dull room regained its warmth and presence, with cabinetry that now looks crafted rather than simply coated. The hand-painted finish catches the light softly, giving the whole kitchen a calmer, more contemporary feel while still respecting its original charm.
Even on projects of this scale, the goal is always the same; to create a finish that feels as though it belongs - a finish that elevates the kitchen without overwhelming it. This rennovation achieved exactly that, proving once again that thoughtful craftsmanship can completely renew a space without replacing a single cabinet.
